Mama Mare POV: How to Overcome a “Cheese Slice Day”

My “little foal” is two and a half, so we’re in the midst of misty whiny tears and expectations I literally can’t meet (Make a bus! Make a fire truck! I want unavailable snacks!) We’re in the midst of muggy and fickle decisions; “I want the blue cup. No! Pink cup!” As you can read, we’re at the peak of pleads, needs, and independency.

So, right now, the little things, such as venturing out and finding a charming cat at the local nursery and eating grilled cheese sandwiches are tremendous outlets. These “Swiss cheese” outlets open little round doors to moments that trump the tantrums. So, with a hop, skip, and jump from paver to paver at Hebert’s Nursery, we followed whispered wishing purrs and God’s goodness.

Throughout the day, as a toddler mama, I’m always looking for outlets that outshine the whine. Most of the door knobs I turn lead to the outside; wandering through the Lafourche Library past topiary bushes of books or taking a “road trip” through the grocery store. (Beep, beep, turning a steering wheel on a “basket jeep”.)

Sometimes, as moms, our days slap us in the face like a slice of cheese. So, find those outlets that overcome the odd overture to the day. Go in a direction that leads to doors that open to secret gardens of sweetness, bypassing prickly two-year-old pauses. Continually look for the golden doorknobs under viny illusions and uncover the true darling day of toddler giggly play.

So, when the Swiss or cheddar cheese slices smack you in the face with whines, unrealistic wants, and ornery attitudes, peel back the day and uncover healthy outlets. Take a spontaneous hop and a skip to your local library or nursery filled with activities and exploration for you and your little one. Follow a storybook cat around a flowery corner, and there you will see your toddler amongst new sun dialed light: a little person finding its way through a freshly watered world.
