Mama Mare POV: Get on your Toddler’s Level
Our family is in the toddler era. The era of Bluey shenanigans, endless snacks, ballerina twirls, childrens’ songs on repeat, major to major messes (there are no minor messes), wiping runny noses, bedtime stories, and the occasional and on cue feisty (carry your toddler out of a cafe while they scream) fit. We’re in the era of easy access drive thru’s and in and out shopping trips.
We’re in the age of breakdowns, tantrums, and tears. Even though I sometimes trip and tumble in the teaching moments, I’ve learned to readjust my position. I’ve learned to get on my knees and get on my toddler’s level.
What happens when you get on your toddler’s level?
In their manic moments, when you connect at their eye level, you can tie a ribbon around their heart. Then, with words of wisdom, pull them back into sensibility.
When you reach their gaze, you can easily wipe away angry tears. Your toddler will sense and see an exposure of composure (from you). Then, they will want to match your stable stature.
“Reducing your height” will lessen intimidation. Instead of your toddler feeling insecure and interrogated, they will feel secure in your leveled and loving discipline.
When you get on a toddler’s level and engage at eye level, “heart to hearts” seem more “two year old” understandable.
So, I’m continually learning to get on my knees to connect more deeply with my toddler. As a mom, I’m also learning to get on my knees in prayer, asking God for a Kleenex of wisdom to wipe away discontentment to keep a healthy home.
