South Louisiana Miracle Snow is Creating Core Memories amongst Houma, Thibodaux, and the Surrounding Flurry-Blurred Bayous

As soon as I woke up this morning in Thibodaux, Louisiana, I pulled back my white curtain and my mind began to ice skate over a pond of memories…white snow memories amidst Michigan pines.

Today, January 21st, 2025 is an unexpected and unprecedented day. Inches of miracle snow has graced and embraced the bayous, Cypress trees, pirogues, trawl boats, and everyone’s kid-at-heart hearts.

This miracle snow has brought about emotions (in moms, grandmas, teachers, and the overall community) that is kindred to the sparkle of wonder in children’s eyes. It has produced dancing drifts of joyous demeanors that seem to be sledding all over the community.

“I’m not a mom, but seeing the neighborhood kids play in the snow makes me giddy! It's so exciting to see neighbors out and about, playing and shouting,” Modesty, Kindergarten teacher, exclaimed.

If you open your back door (as we have many times) giggles and laughter loudly joyride on the swooshing snowflakes. Moms are working hard, bundling and unbundling their rarin’ to go children, to impact and pack down snow scene memories.

“I love seeing their excitement! I have always wanted this even for myself, and to see my kids get to experience it, (Especially at an age they are able to remember.) is once in a lifetime! They have come in and out the house about 100 times all day tracking in snow and water. I would clean my house all over again just for this,” Macy, mom of two, explained with excitement.

This extreme rarity in South Louisiana has blanketed the state with moments of priceless purity. Children can be heard running through the neighborhood, catching snow on their tongues. Makeshift sleds, carrying top-heavy toddlers, glide over winter glitter. And, grandmas get to witness a once-in-a-lifetime wonderment as their grandchildren gallivant through a shaken snow globe.

“As a grandmother, it is amazing to see my kids play with their kids during this rare event; making memories,” Andre, grandma to two granddaughters, exclaimed.

Today, everyone feels like they are ten again (even if they don’t regularly experience snow). Today, the reflex to lay down and create a snow angel occurs in the young and old. This miraculous day, a sense of joyous purity powder-coats Houma and Thibodaux neighborhoods, and the surrounding flurry-blurred bayous.

“I’m so thankful that we got to experience something so magical with our children that a ton of people take for granted. I feel so blessed,” Taylor, mom of two, said with gratefulness.

Today, is a miracle, a blessing from God. It is a gift that resembles His love; the washing of our sins to bring about snowy white purity and joy.
